REVIEW OF DECEMBER 7, 2004 SBE 18 MEETING
Chapter
18's December meeting was hosted by Temple University Public Radio/WRTI at
their new facilities at 1509 Cecil B Moore Avenue on the campus of Temple
University.
THE
BUSINESS MEETING...
Tobias Q. Poole,
Operating Director, Temple University Public Radio, welcomed all members and
guests to the meeting.
Larry Will, as
usual, gave his news of recent developments at the FCC. He stated that the
process of final DTV allocations has slipped a bit and that channel selection
may be delayed until January or even February. Also, stations at a recent FCC
FM auction fetched from $70,000 to $6.5 million.
Bill Gellhaus,
chapter secretary/treasurer, discussed the upcoming SMPTE and AES meetings.
January will feature
the annual "State of The FCC" meeting with John Rahtes, Philadelphia
Field Office EIC speaking along with a presentation on UPS Battery Maintenance.
The meeting will be held at the Radio One facility in Conshohocken, PA.
The February
meeting will showcase the new studio/technical/entertainment facilities of WXPN
at the University of Pennsylvania including their new "World Cafe
Live" space. Jay Goldman and Jared Styles will be the hosts for that
event.

THE
PRESENTATION...
The presentation
was provided by Tobias Q. Poole (operating director), Joe Patti (production
manager) and Jeff DePolo (contract engineer)--all from Temple University Public
Radio--WRTI. The new facility, which features 10,000 square feet of space,
includes a massive technical plant. Tobias, Joe and Jeff took people around the
plant throughout the evening. The new technical plant, designed by Burt Hill
Kosar Rittelman Associates, is featured on page 36 of the November
2004 Edition of BE Radio magazine. Further details can be seen in

Jim Perry,
certification chair of Chapter 18, gave a talk on SBE Certification--its merits
and facets. This was in response to the Society's request that the local
chapters have "Certification Nights".
