Presentation: TV Broadcast Transmitter Advances

The purpose of this presentation is to update broadcast engineers with several new techniques intended to improve the operating efficiency and performance of digital TV broadcast transmitters. There is high interest among broadcasters to “go green”, and at the same time reduce operating costs. The intended benefits of an improved efficiency transmitter are clear: reduction in system size and floor space requirement, lower capital cost, reduced cooling requirements, improved reliability and reduction of carbon footprint in support of go-green initiatives.

This presentation defines power amplifiers and transmitter efficiency, explains linearity, MER/SNR improvements, Crest Factor Reduction techniques and then goes on to explain new developments in modulation and correction algorithms within an exciter and options for new RF amplifier design. The presentation concludes with a discussion of the expected results and compares the cost trade-offs of complexity, capital expenditure and operating expenditure. Included in this presentation is a “live” demonstration of correction techniques in an ANYWAVE exciter.

Presenter: Perry Priestley – CEO, Anywave

Perry Priestley has worked in the professional broadcast industry for nearly 40 years. Perry currently is the CEO for Anywave, North America. Most recently Perry worked for Comark, and Linear Industries as Vice President of Sales and previously has held positions with iBiquity, Thales, Marconi, Varian and Philips. Perry has presented at over 30 different technical conferences worldwide. Perry worked in many engineering positions from radio and TV development to transmission installation. Perry earned an HND in Electrical Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics from the University of Cambridge in England.
